United Legal Access and The Vine Community Centre’s new Windrush project

United Legal Access has partnered with The Vine Community Centre, to help make legal advice and assistance easily accessible during this pandemic to potential Windrush claimants in Nottingham.
United Legal Access is a grassroots organisation that started it’s community legal work in Nottingham in May 2019 and has been working in Birmingham, Nottingham and London, providing pro bono legal advice with a focus on supporting individuals and communities facing injustice and that are often marginalised, and disenfranchised.
The Vine Community Centre is situated in one of the most disadvantaged areas in Nottingham and also serves surrounding areas with needs arising from very wide cultural diversity, high unemployment, lone parenting, low academic achievement, mental ill health, asylum seekers & refugees, and substance misuse. They engage in projects and activities that meets the needs of the local community.
Collectively, we will be providing legal assistance and support to those who are at risk or shielding due to Covid-19 and those who are unable to meet face to face for any other reason.
A recent successful funding application has enabled us to acquire tablet devices with internet, which individuals who do not have access to internet at home can use during their scheduled online appointment. Volunteers from The Vine will visit individuals in their homes, with a tablet and help them connect to Zoom in time for their scheduled appointment with one of our volunteer advisers. Help with gathering documents and information to support their application will also be provided.
We are looking forward to supporting the Windrush Generation and their descendants in Nottingham through this new project and ensuring that those who have been impacted by the hostile environment receive the quality legal assistance and support they deserve.
